Editor Guide

A built in editing playbook with inline references pulled from top performing DTC ads.

Built for performance editing

Editing quality decides whether strong footage scales or stalls.

This playbook is built from analysis of 99 top performing video ads across 11 DTC brands spending millions on Meta. The difference between a mediocre ad and one that scales to $50K+ in spend often comes down to the edit, not the footage.

⚡ Section 1: The First 3 Seconds

The most important part of the edit.

Rules

  • First frame must be visually interesting. No black screens, no logos, no slow fades.
  • Text overlay within first 1 to 2 seconds. Hook text on screen immediately.
  • If talking head, person should already be mid sentence. Cut the hey guys intro.
  • Audio from frame 1. No silence. No slow music build.
  • Visual movement in first frame. Static equals death.

What top brands do

  • GrĂĽns: Product in hand, text overlay at 0.5s, voice starts immediately
  • Happy Mammoth: UGC creator already talking, pain point as text on screen
  • Menerals: Bold text fills screen with “Your minerals retired early” before any footage
🎞️ Section 2: Pacing and Cut Frequency

The Pacing Formula

  • Seconds 0 to 3: The Hook. Cut every 1 to 2 seconds. Maximum energy.
  • Seconds 3 to 10: The Setup. Cut every 2 to 3 seconds. Establishing problem and context.
  • Seconds 10 to 30: The Body. Cut every 3 to 5 seconds. Cruising speed.
  • Final 5 to 10 seconds: The CTA. Clean single shot. Let the offer breathe.

General rules

  • Average cut frequency across top performers: every 2 to 4 seconds
  • Never hold a single shot for more than 5 seconds unless intentional dramatic pause
  • B roll never longer than 3 seconds per clip
  • When someone talks to camera, cut to product B roll every 5 to 8 seconds
  • Jump cuts are fine and expected in UGC style

By ad format

Listicle

Fastest editing. Cut on every new point. 1 to 2 seconds per point.

UGC Testimonial

Medium pace. Let person talk but cut to B roll regularly.

Founder Authority

Slightly slower. Mix interview with cinematic B roll. Every 3 to 5 seconds.

Before After

Quick cuts during before, smoother during after.

Problem Solution

Fast during problem, smooth during solution.

🔤 Section 3: Text Overlays and Typography

Rules

  • Bold, clean sans serif fonts. Nothing fancy, nothing script.
  • Text big enough to read on phone. Test on your phone before delivering.
  • Position: Bottom third or center. Never top. Platform UI cuts there.
  • Color: White with black stroke or shadow. Or white on dark semi transparent bar.
  • Duration: At least 1.5 seconds per overlay.
  • Max 2 lines on screen at once.
  • Animation: Simple slide in or pop in. Nothing complex.
  • Highlight key words in yellow, green, or brand color.

When to use

  • Hook every time
  • Key benefits
  • Social proof numbers
  • CTA with offer
  • Section transitions

Common mistakes

  • Text appears and disappears too fast
  • Too many fonts
  • Colored text hard to read against background
  • Text covering person’s face
  • Text fine on desktop but unreadable on mobile
🔊 Section 4: Sound Design

Music

  • Background music at 15 to 25% volume relative to voice
  • Match energy to content energy
  • Music from frame 1
  • Beat drop or music shift at product reveal or CTA

Sound effects

  • Subtle whoosh on text animations. Do not overdo it.
  • Click or pop on scene transitions
  • Ding or notification on key benefits
  • Product sounds amplified such as unboxing, clicking, and sliding

Voice and avoid list

  • Clean, clear audio non negotiable. Use noise reduction.
  • Normalized to consistent volume throughout.
  • If bad quality, add captions and lower voice slightly.
  • Avoid royalty issues. Licensed or royalty free only.
  • Avoid overly dramatic sound effects.
  • Avoid complete silence at any point.
🎨 Section 5: Color and Visual Treatment

General

  • Consistent color grading throughout entire ad
  • Slightly warm color grade works well for most DTC
  • Make sure faces are well lit. Dark clips look amateur.
  • Boost saturation slightly for product shots. Keep skin tones natural.

UGC style

  • Do not over color grade. It should look authentic.
  • Match the iPhone look with slightly warm, slightly contrasty treatment.

Branded polished and aspect ratio

  • More intentional color grading expected
  • Match brand colors where possible
  • 9:16 vertical for everything
  • Horizontal footage: crop and reframe. No black bars.
  • Square footage: add branded backgrounds top and bottom or crop to 9:16
✂️ Section 6: Transitions

What works

  • Hard cut for 80% or more of transitions. Clean, fast, professional.
  • Match cut between similar shapes and movements
  • Zoom in or out with subtle 5 to 10% shift adds energy between same angle shots
  • Swipe: quick horizontal or vertical move between sections

What does not

  • Dissolve or crossfade. Looks dated and corporate.
  • Star wipe, spin, and novelty transitions look amateur.
  • Slow slide transitions
  • Any transition taking more than 0.3 seconds
Rule of thumb: if you are thinking about which transition, just hard cut.
đź’¬ Section 7: Subtitles and Captions

Mandatory for every ad.

Rules

  • Animated or highlighted word by word captions are the current standard
  • Bold, clean, readable font. White with black outline.
  • Position: bottom center above platform navigation area
  • Large enough to read on mobile
  • Every word must be correct. Misspelled equals unprofessional.
  • Perfectly synced. Even half a second off looks sloppy.

Style options

  1. Word by word highlight in the Captions.ai style
  2. Phrase based captions with 3 to 5 words at a time

Avoid

  • Captions covering important visuals
  • Captions lagging behind speaker
  • Auto generated captions without manual review
  • Hard to read font or color
🧩 Section 8: Format Specific Editing Guides

Listicle / Rapid Fire

  • Number on screen for each benefit
  • Quick cuts 1 to 3 seconds per point
  • Different B roll per benefit with no reuse
  • Consider progress bar or counter
  • Upbeat driving music

  • Let person’s energy drive the edit
  • Product B roll every 5 to 8 seconds
  • Text overlays reinforce key points
  • Keep authentic feel

Founder / Authority

  • Slower, more intentional pacing
  • Intercut talking with cinematic B roll
  • Lower thirds for credentials
  • Slightly more polished color grade
  • Confident, trustworthy music

Before / After

  • Before: desaturated, faster, choppier, uncomfortable
  • Transition: clean cut or creative match cut
  • After: warmer colors, smoother, satisfying
  • Side by side comparisons when possible

Problem Agitation Solution

  • Problem: fast cuts, shaky handheld feel, urgent text
  • Agitation: intensify with more text, faster cuts, concerned music
  • Solution: calm down with clean product shot, smooth music, and relief
